President calls for caution on roadways

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, December 4, 2019

His Excellency, President David Granger, has called for citizens to be more cautious when utilising the country’s roadways.

He made the call in an address to mark National Road Safety Week 2019 which ran from November 24 to 30.

“I urge all road users to observe the Guyana Police Force’s code of behaviour – care, caution, consideration, common sense and courtesy – as they drive on our roadways.”

The president deemed road accidents a threat to human safety saying that “every accident is one too many; every death is too great a loss that our country cannot afford.”

One hundred and fourteen people have been killed in 97 road accidents so far this year, with 21 persons, including three children, losing their lives as a result of accidents in November.

According to the Head of State, “this insane increase in road fatalities has been caused, mainly, by persons driving at excessive speeds, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without due care and attention, and driving on roads which are congested or unsafe for other road users.”

President Granger said he had proposed a multi-layered approach to ensure safer roadways.  This involved enforcement of traffic laws, more road safety education through a systematic and sustained countrywide campaign, strengthening the drivers’ licensing process, and improved engineering solutions for safer roads.

The president noted that passengers also have a responsibility to ensure the drivers of the vehicles they are travelling in adhere to the road safety rules.

The Head of State also extended sympathy to the relatives of those who lost their lives during the recent road accidents.
