President commits to promoting science education
−Donates $ 1 Million to The Bishops High School
−As the school celebrates 150th Anniversary

His Excellency President David Granger today presented a cheque for one million dollars to the Principal of The Bishops High School, Marilyn Gibson.
He was at the time delivering the feature address at the school’s 150th anniversary.
The Head of State noted that the cheque will support the Secondary School’s efforts to boost and further promote its science education programme.
President Granger recalled that “Bishops began teaching biology in 1943 using the laboratories of her brother Queen’s College and the first science mistress was employed only in 1947 and biology, chemistry and later physics laboratories were added.”
“I commit myself to continue to supporting science education financially in BHS,” he pledged.
Reiterating that education is among the government’s top priorities during the decade of development, the President noted that science education, in particular, is key to the success of economic transformation.
“The country will need an A to Z of scientists from agronomists to zoologists for transformation and national development. The decade of development will place a high priority on creating a core of science scholars who will become the future captains of industry.”
The decade of development presented by President Granger is based on four pillars of transformation – Guyana as a Petrostate, Green state, Digital nation and an Educated nation.
The cheque was drawn from the National Endowment for Science and Technology (NEST) fund which science education in schools. To date, the fund has spent over $50Million to improve science laboratories at CPCE and other educational institutes in Guyana.
