President Granger announces National Squatter Resettlement Commission for March 15

DPI, Guyana, Friday, January 31, 2020

In a move to end homelessness and provide adequate housing for all of Guyana, His Excellency President David Granger this evening announced that his administration will be setting up a National Squatters Resettlement Commission on March 15th later this year.

The Commission, which will come under the Ministry of Communities, will in effect target squatters’ settlements, which the Head of State remains a huge problem across Guyana.

The Head of State was addressing another huge crowd of supporters at the Leonora Track and Field ground, in Region Three this evening, as the coalition continues its elections campaign.

The Head of State referred to the community of Plastic City in Vreed-en-Hoop as an “abscess” in the region, which, he noted will be dealt with very soon.

“By the time the APNU+AFC is finished, there will be no Plastic City,” the President said to the rousing crowd.

“People must not live like that in Guyana. People must not live like that in region Three. We have to abolish squatting. No slums! No shanties!” the Head of Stated underscored.

The issue of squatter settlements is one the APNNU+AFC government has been battling with since it took office. Through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), the government has been taking all steps to address the issue.
