Prime Minister and Ministerial team assess impact of damaged koker door at Diamond

Statement from the Office of the Prime Minister

Following damage to the koker door at Diamond, East Bank of Demerara as a result of high tides, Prime Minister, Brig. (ret’d), Hon. Mark Philips; Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha; Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill, and Minister within the Ministry of Local Government, Hon. Anand Persaud, visited the scene to assess the situation.

Also present was Director-General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Lieutenant Colonel, Kester Craig, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Mr. Fredrick Flatts.

Ministers Mustapha and Edghill have immediately mobilised equipment to be moved to the area for the door to be repaired within the shortest possible time; to bring relief to affected residents.

The Diamond Secondary School has been identified as a temporary shelter, and the CDC was instructed to make immediate preparations so that affected residents can be accommodated.

Prime Minister Phillips conducted a walk-through of the community to assess the impact of the floods. He reassured residents that measures are being put in place to provide relief.

He shared his concerns over the inconvenience they are now facing and assured that works will be expedited.

The situation and progress on remedial works will continue to be monitored.
