Prime Minister visits Highbury, Berbice

GEORGETOWN – The Berbice Indian Cultural Committee celebrated 179 years since the MV Whitby docked at Plantation Highbury with the first batch of indentured laborers. These 128 men, women and children, hailing from Calcutta, were part of the first batch of 249 East Indians to migrate to British Guiana via the MV Whitby.

Today’s celebrations were held at the Planation Highbury Memorial Site, East Bank Berbice.

H.E President David Granger, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Ministers of Government and Officials, Members of Parliament, Regional Officials and Village Leaders attended and participated in the celebrations.
