“Progress will quadruple we are back into office,” stated Minister of Finance, Hon. Winston Jordan at a well-attended community meeting hosted at Yeoville, a village on the West Coast of Berbice (WCB).

Addressing the residents during an interactive session, the minister said the outreaches and meetings, have enabled him to see firsthand the development wrought with new roads, wells, streetlights across communities.

He noted the lack of “iconic projects” that some have criticised the government for not undertaking, were for nought since the Granger-led administration is committed to bringing real development to the people who most need it.

“What is iconic is the development being brought to communities. It is how improved your life is, how your life has been touched.”

The veteran economist advised the residents to start the conversation about how they would like to see oil and gas revenues being spent.

“We would like to hear from your community, what you would like to do with this money… Water, roads, good housing, proper education for your children. That is the ultimate goal that we see this government doing in its ‘Decade of Development’ which the president has named the period from 2020 to 2029.” He added “Better incomes, better health… this how we are planning. This our dream,” he continued.

The meeting heard residents requesting additional roads parallel to the coast to ease congestion. In response, the minister said a study has been signed to examine the extension of the Railway Embankment road from Belfield to Rosignol.

When the issue of banking difficulties was also brought to the minister’s attention, he noted that it is being addressed at the highest levels and will be resolved very soon.

“A National Banking System is set for a trial run, early next year,” he said and this will enable better recognition of electronic transactions and ease payments.

A fence for the community centre’s compound will also be tendered, and constructed soonest, the minister promised.

The meeting, which is one several conducted across Region 5, was welcomed by residents
