Promise delivered: Public Health Ministry takes specialised medical outreach to Monkey Mountain

─ first of its kind for the village

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, October 31, 2019

The nine hundred plus residents of Monkey Mountain are set to benefit from a two-day outreach, where they will receive specialised medical services. Among the services being taken to the residents of Region 8 are eye care – where visual assessments will be done, paediatrics – since a majority of the population are children, gynaecology, family planning, vaccination, general medicine and dental services – said to be in the village for the first time.

This outreach is said to be the first of its kind to the village, since specialised medical services are mostly available at Mahdia. The village, which only has a health post, does not have a doctor stationed permanently, and as such, the health ministry has since seen it fit to have the medical team visit.

The residents of Monkey Mountain will access these services from October 31 through November 1. Persons from neighbouring villages, who will also be visiting the village for the commissioning of the Lapidary on Friday, can benefit from these services.

At a community meeting held on Sunday, residents requested a doctor be stationed in the village since it has a large population. Public Health Minister, Hon. Volda Lawrence, who was chairing the meeting, immediately committed to having a medical team sent to the village within a week.

A decision was also taken for doctors to be deployed regularly to the area while there are plans to upgrade the facility where a general medical practitioner will be stationed to render health services to the residents. This is part of the Public Health Ministry’s vision of ensuring health services are accessible to all persons in Guyana, regardless of their location.
