Promoting increased uptake of renewable energy in Guyana

─Dept. of Environment, GGGI, engage interested stakeholders

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, January 30, 2020

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) partnered with the Department of Environment to engage several stakeholders who would wish to invest in the Renewable Energy Sector. at the Pegasus Hotel on Thursday.

The potential investors will be working with the Department of Environment and GGGI to promote the increased use of renewable energy in Guyana.

Consultant at GGGI Sudha Gollapudi explained that the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are long-term contracts between the private and government entities for providing a public asset or service.

She said Guyanese should consider collaborating since substantial capital is needed to achieve national projects. Gollapudi pointed out that income classification, high debts burdens and access to global capital markets are added to reasons why interested citizens should join hands to attain this goal.

Meanwhile, Director of the Department of Environment, Ndibi Schwiers stated that her department which serves as the focal point for GGGI, actively engaged with the organisation in October 2017.

In 2018, the duo executed a project titled “Urban Sector Solar Energy Program,” aimed to create the conditions necessary to scale up distributed solar PV technology in Guyana.

“As part of this project, 44 companies were visited, while technical and economic analyses were done for 34 companies. The output of this project saw the creation of a project pipeline of 14 MWp of potential solar ‘rooftop’ PV,” Schwiers disclosed.

Further GGGI applied to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for funding through its Readiness Support to assist additional work in Guyana. This funding was approved and work commenced in February last year, under the project “Enhancing Guyana’s Access to GCF to transition to Renewable Energy.”

The Coalition Government is committed to working with the private sector in ensuring that Guyana transitions to a green economy in keeping with the vision articulated in the Green State Development Strategy Vision 2040.

According to Director Schwiers, through this strategy, Guyana is expected to convert to 63 percent renewable energy by 2035 and shift to a low-carbon emissions transport sector among other actions.
