Promoting solid waste disposal best practices for 2019 in Constituency 7

The promotion of proper solid waste disposal and separation of waste is part of Ivelaw Henry’s agenda for 2019 in Constituency 7.

The areas included are Lacytown, Bourda and Stabroek areas. Though small, the constituency is critical as it is the heart of the city and the upkeep is essential to its occupants.

Security is one of the troubling issues in this constituency, especially in the Stabroek and Bourda areas. Henry has overlooked the improvement of drainage and irrigation in 2018 for his constituency and has seen its benefits thus far as flood waters in these areas are receding quickly.

He now has his eyes set on the improvement of security and helping the city constabulary police. The installation of cameras in the market place for surveillance is a priority, as opposed to patrols which is an older approach to security.

Also included on that agenda is the installation of lights throughout the constituency.

Up for discussion is the relocation of vagrants from the streets of the city to shelters where some, if not all, can be rehabilitated. It is also hoped that some can even be employed following assessment of their rehabilitation, so they’d be able to support themselves.

In Constituency 7, keeping the city tidy is an uphill task, but progress is being made. Henry has reached out to the business community and received a favourable response in the cleanliness of spaces, but in the areas of efficient separation of waste and proper garbage disposal – this requires awareness. “Many people do not know, but it is their legal responsibility to keep their surroundings clean.”

Additionally, there have been several self-help projects rolled out in Constituency 7, and to date, Henry said many persons could be seen cleaning nearby drains and removing garbage from their surroundings.

Addressing the issue of rates and taxes, Henry made a special call for persons in the commercial and domestic classes to pay their rates and taxes as these rates incur interest when not paid on time. He is encouraging persons to visit City Hall and pay their taxes; if all cannot be paid at the beginning of the year, then it can be paid quarterly to prevent any interest build up.
