Providing for senior citizens
─ new sanitary block commissioned at Mabaruma Post Office

A brand-new sanitary block at the Mabaruma, Region 1, Post Office was commissioned on Saturday, by Minister of Social Protection, Hon. Amna Ally.
The minister’s visit formed part of a more extensive ministerial fanout exercise to several communities throughout the Barima-Waini Region.
Financed by the Managing Director of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, the initiative was done to fulfil a request from several senior citizens in the community.
The Social Protection Minister remarked that the senior folks have made numerous contributions to their communities and by extension Guyana and must be treated with great respect.
“You have spent your years addressing many serious issues in our country. You would have done your lot, and we recognise that, and we want to ensure that you spend these years enjoying it,” Minister Ally reiterated.
During a meeting with residents from the village of Barabina, Minister Ally listened attentively to their concerns to craft solutions to the issues. Responding to one of the requests made, Minister Ally assured that the Coalition Government will construct a state-of-the-art multi-purpose centre in the community which will benefit all of the residents. This will be done through the government’s Sustainable Livelihood Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) programme.
Those gathered at the meeting also benefited from footwear compliments of the First Lady, Her Excellency, Sandra Granger, while others were gifted sport gear and equipment. Additionally, Minister Ally presented certificates of completion to participants of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hinterland Employment and Youth Service (HEYS) Programme.
