Ptolemy Reid Rehab Centre in blood drive

DPI, Guyana, Monday, June 25, 2018

The Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre recently collaborated with the National Blood Bank to host a blood drive as part of “Rehab Week 2018”.

Staff and others associated with the centre had the opportunity to donate their blood, all overseen by occupational therapist attached to the centre, Calvin Lawrie.

Lawrie said that in keeping with the theme for Rehab Week 2018, from June 24 to 30, this is a way of giving back to the community and the country as a whole. “We are hosting a blood drive for rehab week and the theme is increasing coverage and enhancing quality and what better way to do than a blood drive. We are promoting saving lives and reaching out to others.”

He further detailed that giving blood can “help persons with disabilities and even somebody that is very close to you so if they go to the hospital and need blood, you never know from this blood donation drive that we are having here it might be able to save the life of somebody that’s very close to them.”

Staff member, Sharon Miranjie said giving blood is a usual practice on her part: “A couple of years ago we did a blood drive and it inspired me to give blood which I did and ever since then I wanted to give blood every year and it so happens that rehab week is in June and my birthday is in June so I look at it as me giving back as part of my birthday celebration.”

Rehab week will continue with activities at various locations throughout the country. Thus far, for the week, there has been sensitization and awareness sessions, school screenings and a medical outreach in Lethem. There is expected to be a speech therapy workshop among other activities.
