Public Security Ministry condemns destruction of public buildings

—assures “full extent of law will be applied to perpetrators”

The Ministry of Public Security has condemned the recent destruction of public buildings.

Fires have destroyed a GECOM subdistrict building in Wismar, Linden, a section of the CID Office in Anna Regina and an abandoned GDF building in Essequibo, all of which points to arson.

The Ministry in a statement made it clear that “the full extent of the law will be applied to the perpetrators. The Minister of Public Security requested that more security personnel be dedicated to more frequent patrols in every division.”

The Ministry noted that while it cannot conclude whether the incidents were politically motivated or not, thorough investigations are being conducted. A detailed report of each fire is expected from the Commissioner of Police and the Fire Chief.

In light of the current political atmosphere, “the Ministry wishes to implore citizens to remain calm and keep an eye out for mischievous elements who may seek to fuel fear through the conflagration of valuable property and the emotions of many citizens along with it. We can ill-afford any further loss of valuable assets,” the statement read.

On Monday, Minister of Public Security Hon. Khemraj Ramjattan appealed to citizens to be vigilant and do their part to help thwart vandalism of government buildings. The Minister said the cooperation of citizens is necessary to disband criminal minds from executing attempts to destroy public property.

“We have asked all disciplined forces and also members of the public to have an eye out for all these mischief-makers.” Minister Ramjattan stated.
