Pump station to protect Den Amstel/Fellowship residents

DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, May 31, 2018

Residents and farmers in Den Amstel and Fellowship in Region Three will shortly be protected from flooding by a high capacity pump station as part of a countrywide US$4Million programme.

The station will be designed to clear 100 cubic ft of water per second thereby radically reducing the risks of flooding in low-lying areas and farm lands.

Regional Information Officer for Region Three, Ganesh Mahipaul told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that consultations undertaken by Innovative Engineering Consultancy Services have been completed with stakeholders, and the same firm will also be overseeing the works to install the pump.

The project stems from a 2017 loan agreement with the Export-Import Bank of India for Guyana to procure and install eight fixed high-capacity and five mobile drainage and irrigation pumps, along with spares and also finance the training of the use and maintenance of the equipment.

Additionally, Hampton Court and Devonshire Castle in Region Two, Hope and Nooten Zuil in Region Four, Mora Point in Region Five and Rose Hall in Region Six will benefit from the placement of fixed pumps within their communities. The five mobile pumps will provide drainage services to the Georgetown area including La Penitence South, Cummings Canal, Church Street, Sussex Street and South Ruimveldt.

Meanwhile residents of Lanaballi on the Essequibo River yesterday received a newly commissioned ramp.
