“Put people first” – GAM President tells Rose Hall Town Council

DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, April 19, 2018

President of the Guyana Association of Municipalities (GAM) Carwyn Holland, on Wednesday, urged the Rose Hall Mayor and Town Council to collaborate and to put the affairs of the residents before politics.

Addressing the council at their statutory meeting, Holland said, “In local government, there will not always be smooth sailing, but we must forget differences and work towards one common objective of serving people since conflicts stymie development of a council and ultimately affects productivity and efficiency.”

The councillors were also reminded that their decision to participate in the Local Government Elections (LGE) stemmed from the fact they all wanted to see their community realise its true potential. Holland noted that this desire should never fade since the primary focus of all municipal councillors is service to the community for the benefit of the residents.

“Working alongside comrades and staff for the betterment of Rose Hall, looking beyond differences for the greater good and building the capacity of each other to ensure sustained development and cohesion is part of the process of local governance,” the GAM president explained.

Holland further advised the councillors to use their subvention wisely, invest in tools to ensure more efficient service, work within the confines of the laws and ignore the temptation to serve party before people.

“Being of service to the people of Rose Hall as a councillor does not mean attending meetings and making the most noise, nor accusations, nor insults, nor even just making academic opinions on issues discussed. Service as a councillor goes way beyond self and contributions in meetings. It also involves meeting the inter-personal needs of the people you represent and looking after all of their interests, selflessly,” he posited.

Calls were also made for businesses and residents to play their part in Rose Hall’s development by paying taxes and keeping their environment clean and garbage properly disposed of.

The GAM president expressed his confidence in the leadership of Mayor Vijay Kumar Ramoo and Deputy Mayor Dave Budhoo and encouraged them to deliver on every election promise made to the people of Rose Hall since they will hold the council accountable.
