– Citizens praise the removal of VAT on electricity initiative

Putting monies back into the pockets of all Guyanese is a priority for Government and with the recent announcement on the Removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Electricity many persons are praising the initiative.
“This means a great thing because there is a lot of persons who cannot afford to pay those high bills so it is very great that the system has been able to remove the VAT from electricity…this announcement is a blessing that we needed,” Deon Richards told the DPI team that visited the Guyana Power and Light (GPL)’s Middle Street branch, to speak with customers on their thoughts about this announcement.
Richards was one of the many consumers waiting to make payment on his utility bill.
Also, in line, was Haresh Persaud, who commended the government for the initiative adding that “it will be a less burden on customers at GPL.”
Equipped with the responsibility of paying his household’s electricity bill, Sunil (only name given) said that this initiative will be ‘in effect at the right time.’
“Removing that 14 per cent off from electricity is certainly beneficial to me and most people especially those who have low income,” he added.
The reversal of the VAT not only caters for households but businesses as a way to secure increase income for the aforementioned.
This initiative set to commence from October 1, aims to bring much-needed relief to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic following an economic slowdown.
