Ramnarine lauds JES for over 1000 law enforcement trainings in Guyana

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, June 8, 2018

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said it has not been lacking local and international training and boasted a stark improvement in its intellectual capacity over the last three years. This was made possible particularly through the Justice Education Society (JES) programme, funded by the United States Government.

Police Commissioner (ag) David Ramnarine.

Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine said, on Thursday, that since 2015, JES has provided law enforcement training to some 1,064 persons. Ninety percent of this number represent ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The remainder includes engagements with prosecutors, magistrates, lawyers and staff of the DPP. The force also benefitted from investigative software and State of the Art property rooms, among other things.

The Police Commissioner was addressing the new “Key Opinion Leaders” at the Police Officers’ Training Centre on Friday.

“Over the last few years, the GPF can say that it has not been short from the local and international perspective, key partners from ABC countries, Russia, China. Most of them on sponsored programmes. The force has not been short in terms of achieving and equipping ranks with the much-needed knowledge and skills”, the acting Commissioner explained.

He added the force’s exposure to best practices helps it to “inculcate a more positivistic attitude, as we seek to enhance the provision of police service to the citizenry.”

He warned the officers to “guard against atrophy,” and put what they have been taught into good use. Ramnarine noted the force “has been increasingly under the microscope. Therefore, their professionalism must improve.”

Since the latter half of 2015, the Commissioner stated the GPF has been fortunate to cooperate with the JES. Much of the work, though in the CID, has transferred into various areas in the force. HE described the training as critical for the force’s development.
