Records tumble on day three of Nationals

Discuss, javelin and shot put

The 59th National Schools Championship saw athletes displaying exceptional performances on Day three as several old records tumbled. New lengths were recorded in the girls-under-14 discus event; boys-under-20 javelin throw and male teachers under 31 shot put respectively.

Annastacia Clarke of District 2 (Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon) toppled the old record in discus which stood at 18.30 metres. The new record now stands at 18.58 metres.

District 10’s (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) Joshua Tappin dominated the boys-under-20 javelin, putting up a new record of 57.31 metres. The previous record stood at 55.98 meters and was held by Jermaine Simmons who also represented District 10.

In the shot put, Osafo Dos Santos broke his old record 13.05 metres when he represented District 11(North Georgetown). Representing District 15 (new Amsterdam) at this year’s championship, Dos Santos set a new record of 13.93 metres.

The School’s Championships is being held at the National Track and Field Centre. Other events held today were the male and female high jump, long jump and 400 meters sprint.

Over 1500 of Guyana’s top school athletes from 15 districts competing for the title which is being held by district 10 since 2015.
