A new police station at Aurora on the Essequibo Coast is one of the projects that are in the pipelines to address security issues in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region.

On the sidelines of the ‘Government comes to you’ outreach in Anna Regina, Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan said that the construction of the police station is part of the Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP).

Sharing his view, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson stated that much has been invested into the development of Essequibo starting with the rehabilitation of the Parika Stelling – the gateway to the county.

The Public Infrastructure Minister expressed satisfaction with the ongoing sea defence and road works in the region. He disclosed that the ministry will be collaborating with the region to carry out the infrastructural works.

“We’re looking to do some waterfront development projects in Charity…going forward, we’ll be doing a lot of streets at Lima Sands Phase One and Two, the road to Lake Capoey, etc.”

Meanwhile, homegrown Essequibian Minister of Business, Haimraj Rajkumar is pushing for the region to become a tourist hotspot. He told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that Essequibo has a lot of untapped resources.

“We have the lakes, the Supenaam waterfront is developing into a gem… Essequibo is no longer a Cinderella country; it is moving up and moving forward.”

Minister Rajkumar explained that the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is working on developing a tri-lake initiative which is expected to boost the tourism sector in the region.

Some of the significant developments in the region include the construction of the Wakapao walkway, the Anna Regina powerplant, the construction of nursery schools at Cotton Field and Mainstay, a modern Abram Zuil Secondary School and the Supenaam Stelling upgrade.
