Reg. 2 roadworks underway

─ multiple communities benefit from upgrades

DPI, Guyana, Friday, March 22, 2019

Rita Goddette of Charity Extension Scheme, Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region 2), like all other residents along the Essequibo Coast can now traverse the region without hassle due to the efforts of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

A resident of Charity Extension Scheme for over 13 years, Goddette told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that prior to the works carried out by the ministry, the roads were in a deplorable condition. “It was terrible, but now, it looks so nice… cars coming in won’t be damaged,” she remarked while praising the government for the initiative.

For years, residents had been voicing their concerns about the network of poor and neglected infrastructure which had caused economic constraints for many since Charity is now a heavily commercialised port.

The upgrades to the road in the Charity Extension Scheme cost $9M and was carried by GuyAmerica Construction Incorporated.

Additional works are set to be done this year on the other half of the access road at the cost of $28M. Also, street lights are to be installed before the entire rehabilitation process is completed.

The Public Infrastructure Minister noted that plans are already in place for street lights to be installed along various parts of the coast.

“We have the lights but, in some areas, we have to install new transformers particularly in the areas that never had,” he explained.

Charity Extension Scheme is only one of many areas in which the Ministry of Public Infrastructure is currently carrying out rehabilitation works. On March 15, 2019, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson visited the region where he inspected various ongoing road projects. These areas included Henrietta Sideline Damn, Onderneeming Sandpit Road, Lima Pump Station Road as well as Queenstown Main Canal Bridge and Sawmill Road.

Minister Patterson, in a meeting with the Regional Democratic Council Region 2 (RDC), disclosed that six roads will be done within the township of Anna Regina along with 12 additional roads.
