Reg. 5 Department of Education honours mothers

― 100 mothers being recognised

Approximately 100 mothers from across Mahaica-Berbice, Region 5 were honoured for their outstanding support and dedication towards the academic life of their children. The region’s Department of Education Schools Welfare’s Section was once again privileged to fete the mothers during a luncheon and award exercise, hosted at the Lachmansingh Primary School, West Coast of Berbice, on May 9.

Mothers with children in the nursery, primary and secondary schools within the ambit of the region were selected.

Regional Education Officer (ag), Deon Lewis-Clarke, in brief remarks, noted that “mothers are the glue which holds a family together.” Those honoured were urged to continue working diligently with the education department and teachers, to produce successful students. “I want to take this opportunity to thank you for participating in this programme and for supporting the school. Without your assistance, our institutes will not receive maximum results,” Lewis-Clarke said.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education was Technical Officer to the Minister of Education, Simone Wills who commended the Education Department for initiating such a remarkable programme and noted the pivotal role parents play in their children’s academic life.

“This level of partnership might foster success for the students, the school, the community, the region and of course the nation at large… Such an effectual partnership is based on mutual trust, respect and shared responsibility for educating our children,” Willis stated.

Extending Mother’s Day greeting on behalf of the government, Member of Parliament, Jennifer Wade, who attended the occasion, used the opportunity to ensure those in attendance were aware of government’s commitment of providing the good life for all. This year’s celebrations mark the third of its kind hosted in Region 5. According to Senior Schools Welfare’s Officer, Gloria Davidson-James, today’s activity reiterates the department’s mission to point pupils, parents and the community, to the highest degree.

Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 12, 2019. The Day is usually observed on the second Sunday in May. It’s not a federal holiday; however, it is widely celebrated as a special day to honour all mothers and motherhood.
