Yugeeta Kumar of Grant 1651 Crabwood Creek secured 16 subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) earning 14 grades ones and 2 grade twos placing her in the 17th position in the country and 2nd in Region Six.

From the tender age of two weeks, Yugeeta Kumar was nurtured and taken care of by her grandparents Anetta Persaud and Madan Kumar who ensured throughout her life she was given access to a sound education. As a newborn, her parents separated and while her father initially supported her in Primary School, her grandparents utilised their old age pension and with the help of an uncle, she managed to complete her studies.

Kumar explained, she made it her goal to succeed at the examinations, in order to make her grandparent proud, since they sacrificed a lot to ensure she was not faced with challenges and supported her along the way.

“The results did not come as a surprise to me because I have tried to ensure I do my best. When I received my results, I was happy and grateful”. At school, most of her free time was spent in the Biology, Chemistry and Physics labs at the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.

The ambitions teen is seeking to further her studies in the field of Bio-Chemistry and is hoping to score a scholarship

“Biochemists have made a tremendous impact throughout the world and have been responsible for a huge number of scientific breakthroughs in the area of medicine, agriculture, veterinary, biotechnology to name a few, this is what drives me to know how much you can offer to the world. Hence the reason why I want to follow this path it does not limit you to one area of study but to find out so much more,” Kumar said.

At 72, her grandfather Madan Kumar, a former Acting Sergeant of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said he has always believed in the importance of education. “I am proud of her. She has always been focused from the start. Since she was little we saw her potential, she loved reading and would always be asking questions”. Madan Kumar said it would be a dream come through if Yugeeta is granted a scholarship.

Yugeeta Kumar encourages future students sitting the examinations to set their goals early and work towards it.
