Region Five School Welfare Department honours fathers

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Dozens of fathers were today rewarded for their involvement in their children’s education by the School’s Welfare Department of Region Five, Mahaica-Berbice.

The fathers were chosen by the Welfare Department based on their active and evident attendance, support and participation in PTA meetings, Parent/Teacher conferences and the welfare of their children.

Vickram Mohabir, Senior Guidance and Counselling Officer of the Ministry of Education stressed the importance of a father’s presence and involvement in a child’s life and highlighted the negative impacts on children from fatherless homes.

“[We need to work on] developing and empowering men and when we do this, the social ills that we face in a society will dissipate,” Mohabir said. “Children with involved fathers have less emotional and behavioural difficulties in adolescence.”

He also championed the fathers’ involvement in ensuring children receive adequate educational opportunities. This, he said, will foster the children’s success at school.

“The men that are here, you have started a journey, and you’re not to turn back. You are exemplary men, you are men who are role models, showing society and the country how it should be done.”

The fathers were treated to performances by students and received tokens and certificates chronicling their achievements.

The ceremony, held under the theme “The heart of a father is a masterpiece of nature”, was hosted at the Latchmansingh Primary School in Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
