Region Nine children benefit from $50M school uniform, supplies vouchers

The Government has disbursed school uniform and supplies vouchers valued $50 million to benefit school children in Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine).

The initiative forms part of the Ministry of Education’s ‘Because We Care’ programme, which aims to provide financial assistance to parents to help them to obtain the necessary school supplies for their children.

Minister within Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Anand Persaud delivers his address during the outreach

Minister within Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Anand Persaud said the distribution exercise is evidence of Government’s commitment to citizens in every region of the country.

“We are doing this because we have a message for our people because care about our people and we intend to work hard every day, to ensure that the livelihood of our children and the people in this country gets better.”

The Minister added that this initiative not only lessens the financial burden on parents, but it ensures that the country’s future leaders are given every opportunity to access education, despite the pandemic.

“You as the parent have to ensure that your children have the opportunity to attend school with the necessities and, while this can be done for some, others may find difficulty to do so hence this approach taken by the Government to assist our citizens in any way that we can,” he said.

Minister Persaud also said the Education Ministry will address instances where a child was not registered and not had received a voucher.

Aside from the school vouchers distribution, the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry also distributed a quantity of toys to children for the Christmas season. Children at Rewa, Crash Water and Massara benefitted from this exercise.
