The Region 10 Regional Health Emergency Committee will this week begin screening persons entering the district to prevent the importation of cases of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

Regional Health Officer, Dr. Pansy Armstrong said health workers would conduct the exercise at the Amelia’s Ward Police Outpost and 58 Miles Police Outpost.

The screening outpost at Amelia Ward will check visitors entering the area from Georgetown while the location at 58 Miles caters to those coming from communities such as Mabura and Lethem.

The region has the necessary equipment to conduct the screening exercise.

Meanwhile, the sanitisation exercise which began two weeks ago continues to gain momentum. Last Saturday several sections of the Mackenzie Market, along with the Georgetown bus park were cleaned. The exercise is expected to move to the Wismar shore in a few days.

The Committee is also monitoring the enforcement of the national curfew, which Linden Mayor Waneka Arrindell noted supersedes the regional curfew previously set by the body.

The local curfew, which was announced before the national one, had allowed residents to be out until 8 pm. However, the nationwide curfew mandates citizens to be within their home or yard spaces from 6 pm to 6 am.

Mayor Arindell also urged residents to read the document provided by the Ministry of Public Health, which gives details about how citizens and businesses should operate during this time.

She noted that the Region 10 police ranks would continue to monitor the response of residents and businesses during the curfew.

Lindeners were also reminded that the town was not under “lockdown” as was initially proposed by the Linden Business Network. That measure would have seen borders closed, incoming traffic escorted out of the township and essential businesses opened for only four hours, noon to 4 pm.

Mayor Arrindell said discussions were ongoing on additional measures to combat COVID-19.
