Region Three administration commends government for relief efforts

The Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) administration has expressed gratitude for the tremendous support offered to its residents, by the various ministries and stakeholders, following unprecedented high tides which caused many to be displaced and homes inundated.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) Denis Jaikaran noted that the impact caused by the flooding was so severe that the Leonora Diagnostic and Treatment Centre had to be temporarily closed. However, through the quick response by the Ministry of Public Health and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) the situation was brought under control.

The REO noted that at no time were medical services put on hold since the Den Amstel, Uitvlugt and De Kinderen Health centres were open on a 24-hour basis to facilitate patients. Jaikaran also thanked the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), “who stood with us throughout the ordeal”. He noted that the Guyana Sugar Company (GuySuCo) also played its part making available its staff and facilities at the region’s disposal. The REO also mentioned “the young people from Ministry of Public Infrastructure Community Organised for a Restored Environment (CORE)  who travelled all the way from Berbice” to assist in the clean-up.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge as well as the Ministers of Communities, Public Infrastructure, Natural Resources all conducted on-site inspections to get first-hand information on the incident.

The affected residents received sanitation packages, food hampers and school items for the children. According to Jaikaran, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is continuing to conduct  assessment of the affected area.
