Region Three Guidance Fair a platform for students to access information

Under the theme, “Predict your Future by Creating it,” the Department of Education, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara held its second annual Career Guidance Day today in the compound of the West Demerara Secondary School which attracted scores of secondary school students from Grades 9 to 11.

The Career Guidance Fair is part of a series of activities planned to observe Education Month 2018 which is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Education for a Good Life, through Innovation and STEAMS’ [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Spirituality].

Coordinator of the activity, Senior Guidance and Counselling Officer, Priscilla Gonsalves pointed out that the objective of the Career Guidance Fair includes creating a platform for students from Grade 9 -11 to access information that will assist them in making informed career choices, increase awareness of existing educational and training opportunities locally for continuing education, career and job guidance. Gonsalves noted that will also nurture students’ self-awareness, self-directedness and life skills for continuous learning and training, thereby enabling them to explore viable education and career options through the provision of accurate and comprehensive information.

Also, addressing the packed audience mainly of students, educators and stakeholders at the opening ceremony was Regional Education Officer, Annesta Douglas who said: “This annual activity must continue in the interest of our young people because it is them that must be given the opportunity to make sound decisions if we are to see an organised and well-behaved society. They must be allowed to progress in the future and we must create the avenue to allow such. This is one such avenue and next year promises to be bigger and brighter.”

She further added, “Under the Ministry’s Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) programme, career guidance is taught however it is important to give learners the opportunity to interact with other stakeholders.”

The students were afforded the opportunity to engage a number of representatives from government departments and private entities concerning career and academic opportunities.

Certificates of Participation were given to all the entities that participated.
