National Day of Villages 2018 was observed on November 7 at the Hydronie Play Ground in Essequibo Islands-West Demerara (Region Three). As part of the celebration a medical outreach was conducted and 60 senior citizens received food hampers through a joint effort between the Ministry of Communities and the Regional Administration.

Regional Executive Officer Denis Jaikaran who distributed the hampers to some of the recipients noted that seniors are instrumental to the region’s development and must never be forgotten.

“Because of the hard work and steadfast commitment of our senior citizens to development, today, we currently enjoy a better region and country; therefore, it is our duty not to forget them. Had it not been for them then the battle would have been ours so we must show our appreciation and the donation of the food hampers is the least we can do,” Jaikaran said.

Myrtle Caldera from Stanleytown in expressing her appreciation said, “I am very happy to know that recognition is given to me for my services to this country. The gesture is very good and I must admit that I am surprised to have been among the recipients. For me, this is a step in the right direction and I congratulate all who are involved.”

Edna Mounter from Uitvlugt said, “This is so wonderful. I feel included now. Thanks to all who made this possible. You know sometimes I sit in my hammock and just wonder what is going on out there and here I am seeing before my eyes that we are thought of out there. I am happy, very happy – thank you all.”

The 60 recipients of the food hampers were drawn from the fourteen Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) across the region.
