Regional Health Officers in final 2018 workshop

Regional Health Officers (RHO) in their final capacity building workshop for 2018 are focused on further decentralising the delivery of healthcare throughout Guyana.

The exercise hosted by the Regional Services Department of the Ministry of Public Health runs from October 31 through November 1 and is designed for Regional Health Officers and medical superintendents and senior medical personnel in the regions.

The sessions will cover knowledge shared in the areas of supervisory management, policies and public service rules and budgeting, financing and auditing in health care. Also, Senior Public Health Administrator, Region Ten and Regional Health Officer, Dr. Pansy Armstrong will share with the gathering practical experiences as an RHO.

Director of Regional and Clinical Services, Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Kay Shako encouraged those attending the workshop that a change in their behaviour and attitude was critical to the process of improving healthcare delivery.

“If healthcare is going to be taken to another level then it will call for a transformation in the mindset of our healthcare workers thus creating a culture that will trickle down to the most junior healthcare provider.”

Two capacity building workshops were hosted in March and April with an extensive focus on ensuring that the staff heading the public health sectors in the regions have a clearer understanding of the system in which they work.

After attending these sessions, they are expected to return to their regions and ensure that what they learnt has been filtered down, motivating others outside the system to join and contribute to the overarching vision of the Ministry of Public Health.

The general theme for all RHOs conferences and capacity building workshops is “Collaboratively, we build a resilient health care system that is acceptable, accessible, timely and appropriate to meet the needs of every person in Guyana.”
