“Remapping by Venezuela to own Guyana’s natural resource reserve will not be accepted”

– Action illegal

– will not be accepted

– will not be recognised internationally

DPI, Guyana, Friday, January 11, 2019

Guyana has nothing to worry about, so says Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, in response to announcements by Venezuela that it will be remapping to show ownership of lands and maritime boundaries currently owned by Guyana according to a 1899 Arbitral Award.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Venezuela, as anyone else, can create and produce maps, however, in the case of Venezuela specifically, any move to own Guyana’s natural reserves currently being disputed by the Spanish speaking nation, will be deemed illegal and will not be recognised.

“You cannot change a map showing your boundaries then try to convince the rest of the world that those boundaries are legally sanctioned,” says Min Greenidge.

He explained that for “remapping” to be recognised, all parties involved would have to agree, however, this will not be considered by Guyana.

“No new boundaries for Guyana or Venezuela have been legally sanctioned,” Min. Greenidge emphasised.

The minister says government continues to observe Venezuela’s actions and rhetoric, however, it is not worried.

In addition, Minister Greenidge says government is also pleased with the progress of its case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and anticipates the reaffirmation of the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award.
