“Replace candidates who do not work for you!” ─ PM Nagamootoo

– the Coalition Govt is united and strong despite contesting LGE separately

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo encouraged residents from Auchlyne, East Berbice-Corentyne and surrounding communities to participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE), on November 12, as it is part of building a democratic society.

“A central government will not be able to focus on all the small issues that bother you from day to day so we want you, at the local level, to work in partnership with the municipality, with the region and with the central government so together we make one whole strong unit of democracy in Guyana,” the Prime Minister said.

These sentiments were shared at a community meeting held at the Auchlyne Primary School on Friday afternoon and comes at a time when the Coalition Government seeks to build a perfect democracy from the grassroots upwards in Guyana.

It was highlighted that the pillars of this new democracy are the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, Municipalities, the Regional Democratic Councils and Central Government. The Prime Minister stressed this as he explained the importance of local governance and community involvement in the processes of change and development.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo cited the example of the development of community facilities being undertaken at the NDC level. He urged the residents to elect candidates who can “work” for them and understand the urgency in addressing issues at the community level. The LGE, the Prime Minister said, provides an opportunity for change.

“I say replace those who can’t work for you! Change them! And that is what elections are about, to give you an opportunity to change those who do not work for you.”

He also assured that the Coalition is united and strong “but we are contesting local elections separately” as he explained that this is to give the people a broader choice.
“Local Government is about the people and people are free to choose who they want to.”
Local Government Elections is slated for November 12, 2018. This is the second time LGE is being under the Coalition Government.
