Report of Measles outbreak “patently false” – State Minister

DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, March 29, 2018

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon today discounted reports of a Measles outbreak in Barima-Waini, Region One, as “patently false”.

Public Health Minister, Volda Lawrence reported to the Cabinet that an investigation was completed by a technical team from the ministry, as well as the Pan-American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), which confirmed the non-existence of the outbreak.

Minister Lawrence said her ministry will continue to work with the regional administration to ensure surveillance of the borders and the health and security of citizens. The media was cautioned about publishing such statements.

When the reports initially surfaced, contact was made with Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, who said the reports were untrue.

The minister explained that “in stopping this [Measles], efforts must be preventative so we ensure everyone is vaccinated, do mop-up exercises and be vigilant of our borders. We are working with our partners at PAHO who are on top of things.”

The minister also noted that there may be an increase in the number of Brazilians and Venezuelans seeking healthcare at health facilities bordering communities, however, she assured that these persons are treated, since healthcare services in Guyana are free.
