Resident of Capoey-east assured of access to potable water

Twenty-five families residing on the eastern side of the Capoey community in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region have been assured that they will soon have access to potable water.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Social Cohesion Hon. Dr. George Norton during a recent community engagement. The issue was raised by Toshao Ralph Hendricks who explained that residents on the eastern side of the community utilise stored rainwater for their daily chores. However, he noted the difficulty, they face during the dry season.

“During the dry season that side of the community suffers tremendously…Residents either hire boats to bring in water or I help to transport water from this side (mainland),” he explained.

It was noted that this issue was brought to the attention of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), who dispatched their engineers to evaluate the scope of works to have a well dug in the community. However, no timeline has been given for the commencement of this project.

Lorna Roberts, one of the villagers who live on the eastern side offered a temporary solution to address the water issue, whilst the plans for the construction of the well are unfolding. Roberts suggested the installation of water tanks at each household can act as an immediate solution to their issue.

Minister Norton acknowledged that the idea of water tanks is a good one and committed to speaking to the relevant authorities to have this measure implemented soon. He noted that it is the goal of the government that all residents must have access to clean potable water.

“When we entered office in 2015, His Excellency President David Granger made it clear that residents of the hinterland and outlying communities must have access to equal opportunities and resources offered by the government and services of the relevant agencies, like those on the coastland,” he said.
