Residents of Light Town and Highbury to receive potable water early 2018

Residents of Light Town and Highbury on East Bank Berbice, Region Six, will soon benefit from the delivery of potable water, following the rehabilitation of several wells in and around the two communities. The upgrade of the wells is expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2018.

This was disclosed to the residents of the communities by Managing Director of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, after a brief meeting with the residents, while on his way to prior engagement yesterday.
During the meeting, residents pointed out that they have been without potable water for over 20 years. It was disclosed that residents either receive water from an individual who is contracted by GWI to deliver water on a weekly basis or collect whenever it rains
It was explained that the person is required to deliver three times per week, however, for some two months now, residents have been receiving water once per month.
Dr. Van West-Charles told residents that he understands their concerns, however, currently, GWI does not have sufficient funds required for the construction of new wells. Nevertheless, the Managing Director said that with the rehabilitation of the current wells, persons within the community would be called on to lend assistance.
In addressing the immediate issue of the untimely delivery of water, Dr. Van West-Charles assured that GWI will hire someone from within the area to deliver water to the residents.
Additionally, it was disclosed by the Managing Director that a team from GWI will return to the communities on December 15, 2017, when a meeting will be held to resolve their water supply issues.
Minister of Public Affairs Dawn Hastings-Williams who was also present noted that access to water is the right of every Guyanese and promised to collaborate with GWI’s Managing Director to ensure that they receive potable water.
