The residents of Rincon, Moruca will soon have a bakery constructed to generate income and produce bread for residents of the community. Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe praised the initiative.

“I must say that it is a fantastic idea, because there is no bakery around here and I know bread only comes from Charity and Bakewell is in Georgetown,” Minister Garrido-Lowe told the women of Rincon during a recent visit.

The minister reflected on her previous visit when she encouraged the women there to think of ideas that would yield successful businesses to enrich themselves and the community.

Some of the women pitched the idea of now including men in the bakery, to ensure inclusiveness. Minister Garrido-Lowe reminded that it is a women’s group and it would have to be their decision to include men.

A request was made by the residents to be taken to Georgetown to examine the bakeries to get a clear idea on what a bakery looks like and some of the processes of a baker shop, before they build theirs in Moruca.

She explained, while there are both local and modern technologies for a bakery, “we have to produce it in a commercial and affordable way. So, we’ll examine both.”

Minister Garrido-Lowe explained that due to financial constraints, in September, two women will be trained in agro-processing, so they will be in Georgetown to take a tour of the bakeries.
