Residents of South Turkeyen, on Friday last, took full advantage of the opportunity given to them to raise concerns at a meeting organised by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA). The meeting was held at Sophia Primary School.

Common concerns noted are the need for better roads, drainage and the construction of culverts in the community. In this regard, the CH&PA has reassured that a project will soon take effect to improve the livelihoods of the residents.

Engineer of the Project Department, of the CH&PA, Intakab Indarjeet revealed that the South Turkeyen community has, over the years, become susceptible to flooding due to bad roads and drainage. He assured that remediation would soon take place. “We will improve the lives of residents in South Turkeyen. Very soon the construction of roads and drainage will commence under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility programme. We are also working with our contractors to elevate the roads to reduce easy flooding in the community.”

He explained that during the construction process, slated to begin within a month, skilled and unskilled persons within the community would be given employment with the contractors. “CH&PA is presently awaiting the work programme, and from there we will host another meeting to properly inform residents on the starting plan. However, we are projecting to start with drainage first since the rainy season is here.”

Eagerly awaiting the commencement of the project, the residents applauded CH&PA for the initiative and offered to lend their hands to build the community. “We, the residents, have to do our work. We cannot only depend on the government. We must take it upon ourselves to dispose of our garbage properly. New Infrastructure must come with change,” one of the residents urged.
