The Mayor and Town Council of Rose Hall has partnered with the Central Corentyne Chambers of Commerce (CCCC) to sanitise the entire town and neighbouring communities.

The initiative is one of many the private sector body and the municipality have undertaken to help combat the spread of COVID-19, and it is expected to be a continuous effort.

President of the CCCC, Mohamed Raffik, explained that they supplied the cleaning essentials while the Council provided the labour and equipment for the cleaning process.

On Wednesday afternoon the exercise moved off from the Rose Hall Market Street and combed its way through various streets in the town to Cloud Nine Street in Hampshire and also the Port Mourant Market area.

Executive member, Poonai Bhigroog, noted that in addition to the sanitisation drive, the Chamber also distributed over 1,000 masks to the orphanages within the area as well as provided cleaning supplies and helped to sanitise the buildings.

Additionally, the CCCC has been sponsoring several live television programmes to help spread awareness and tips on how to protect against COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Rose Hall mayor Chatergoon Ramnauth relayed that vendors who fail to adhere to the safety guidelines such as wearing masks, practising proper hygiene, and social distancing, will have their permission to vend suspended.

The Rose Hall Market is currently operating from Sunday to Friday from 06:00hrs to 12:00 hrs and is closed on Saturdays for general sanitisation.

The stalls have been spaced out to ensure there is a three to 6-foot space between the vendors.  Municipal staff are onsite daily to ensure patrons are maintaining physical distance as well as washing their hands upon entering the market.

Meanwhile, Raffik also urged employers to help their workers in light of the decline in business.

“I would like members of the business sector to take care of their employees during this period, help them to see them through this critical time. Because at the end of this, these are the individuals whose services we will need.”
