Safer, reliable travel a guarantee with Linden highway lights

─Bus drivers praise the lighting project

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, January 7, 2020

Drivers who ply the newly-lit Linden-Soesdyke Highway route have welcomed and commended the development.

“I think people will feel safer travelling at night. I think it’s going to help curb the road accidents at nights on the highway,” Seon Campbell, a driver on the Linden-Georgetown route told DPI.

Reflecting on the previously poor lighting conditions along the journey, Campbell stated, “a lot of times it plays with your judgement driving on the highway when it is dark. So, we as drivers on the highway, a lot of times we have to make a proper judgement.”

The driver also noted the lights would make it easier for drivers new to the route to navigate bends which may be dangerous at low light hours.

Another bus driver, Clevon Barker, who has traversed the route for 15 years, lauded the lighting project as well.

“Right about now with the lights we really thankful for it because even if you are driving in the night and a truck breakdown on the road, you could see the truck even though the oncoming vehicles have the lights in your face,” Clevon explained.

For Lyndon John who has established himself as an experienced driver for the past 30 years, the project will have far-reaching effects.

“The impact that it has placed on commuters, especially drivers is wonderful because you can see. Your vision is very much up there with lights.”

At present, 40 lamps are operational along the highway at Kuru Kururu and Bamia with others installed along the Marudi section of the thoroughfare to be powered soon.
