Salary increases for “now and for evermore” – Min. Jordan assures

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, November 14, 2019

The salary hikes announced by His Excellency, President David Granger on Wednesday, are not just an increase for this year, but such payments will become bigger and better as the years’ progress, and the economy transforms.

On Thursday, the Finance Minister, Hon. Winston Jordan gave assurances that Guyanese need not fear, as the government will continue to do what is in the best interest of all citizens.

He said talks in the opposition quarters, opposing the salary hike, are nothing more than foolish,’ and should be outrightly rejected, as the opposition does not have the interest of Guyanese at heart.

The Finance Minister was at the time engaging residents of Den Amstel, a village on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD). Many of the residents in attendance articulated their gratefulness to this administration for its developmental initiatives.

“Let [them] know by tomorrow that the monies that have been allocated to our hardworking public servants, our hardworking members of the disciplined services, are given now and for evermore. It is a sustainable increase that, in January, you will see in your pay packet, and next year December, you will see in your pay pocket,” Minister Jordan told the listening residents at the primary school in the village.

He said the opposition has no programme for anyone, yet they are “throwing things among you to confuse you.”

“You have to remain united. You have to listen to the Coalition, and you have to speak on behalf of the Coalition,” he said.

He contended that the journey towards March 2, 2020, will be met by stringent attempts to perplex Guyanese. However, all and sundry need to “keep your eyes on the prize and not drop the ball.”

“As I have indicated in the past that this is the “mother of all elections. When we win this; we will continue the good life that we have been trying to give to every community. We can do that in a bigger way than in the four years that we have done so far,” he assured.

He reminded residents of the step to the good life which is even closer than ever before. By next month, oil giant ExxonMobil is expected to produce the first barrel of oil here, he reminded. From there onward, Guyana will begin getting monies unheard of in the country’s history.

“You and your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren, need to experience this excitement that is coming to Guyana,” he exclaimed.

The minister met with the residents as part of a wider outreach by the government ministers to listen to the people at the grassroots level.
