At a press briefing today, event organisers said, while the contest is geared towards fun and adventure for the bikers, it also aims to promote community tourism in Guyana.

Toshao of Moraikobai, Collin Adrian was appreciative of the interest shown in visiting his community, which he has been trying to promote as a tourist destination. He explained that his community began to venture into other means of acquiring income since its main activity of logging has become challenging following new criteria.

“From the time I took office I tried to attract tourism. I see it as a key area where every individual in the area can benefit.”

Meanwhile, the Toshao noted his villagers have been working to prepare for those venturing out to the event. Adrian urged persons to visit the village and experience its wildlife animals and the hospitality of his people.

Guyana Tourism Officer, Ronald Smith praised the initiative, since he believes it will highlight local tourism.

“The GTA [Guyana Tourism Authority] has been very supportive of events like these, more so in diversifying Guyana’s tourism experience, since we have recognized that there is the need for events like these. There are motorsports events, but not an event that takes you in such a terrain,” Smith said.

According to the Coordinator, Shane D’Andrade there will be a total of ten teams comprising of 30 motorbikes venturing on the drive. One team will be permitted to have three bikers only. Persons interested in joining the challenge will attract a registration fee of $25,000 per team.

However, D’Andrade noted an individual biker will be allowed to join a team with no fee attached; the biker will be permitted either one hour before the team leaves or one hour after. At the halfway point of the journey, bikers will be allowed to stop and refuel at a service station provided by the organisers of the event.

Additionally, D’Andrade said, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) will be providing an ambulance and two doctors and medical personnel to be on the drive, since the challenge will consist of several obstacle courses along the way.
