Seafield collaborate to upgrade community ground

Residents of Seafield, West Coast of Berbice have mobilised to form a Fund-Raising Committee to enable the upgrade of the playground in the area.
Residents raised the matter during a meeting with Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Valerie Garrido-Lowe, on Friday.
President of the Rainbow Generation Youth and Sports Club, Wayne Fraser registered his concern for youths in the community who are losing because of the state of the community playground. “The Inter-house school sports had to be cancelled because currently the NDC and the region are working to get the ground fixed. The councillors did their best but the machines have to come from the region,” he noted. According to Fraser, because of the delay, future planned sporting activities are on hold.
Footballer, Orwin McDonald said players cannot utilise the ground at night because lights need to be installed. In response, Councillor Carol Innis disclosed that lights have already been allocated for the ground.
It was highlighted that four light poles are needed to facilitate the lights. Addressing the matter, Minister Garrido-Lowe suggested that the community apply to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to fund or subsidise the lights. She also recommended that the residents establish a fund-raising community to support small community projects that would benefit all. This proposal was welcomed by the community.
Agriculture was another major highlight of the meeting. Residents acknowledged that work was done to upgrade the farmlands however they noted that there needs to be strict monitoring of heavy-duty vehicles that might cause damage to the area.
Highlighting the benefits that a Co-op Society can bring to the farming community, the minister also suggested they take steps towards value-added production, thereby providing both employment and an economic boost to the community.
Before concluding her meeting, Minister Garrido-Lowe emphasised the importance of children attending school.
“The focus of our country the focus of our president is education, education for everyone especially the youths because you want competent forward-thinking people to run this country to ensure it progresses so that our citizens will be safe, will be comfortable and will be happy.”
