– “do not panic, call the nearest police station or 220-4173’ – Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels

– all efforts being made to ensure that escapees are recaptured

DPI, Guyana, Monday, October 15, 2018

A manhunt has been launched, by members of the security force, for three prisoners who escaped the holding bay of the Lusignan Prison earlier today.

The escaped prisoners are remanded murder accused, Travis Evans, age 23 of ‘C’ Field Sophia; Sudesh Dyal, 23, remanded for break and enter and larceny and escape from custody, and Dextroy Pollard, 29, of Wales Village for break and enter and larceny.

Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels.

According to the Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels, the escape took place at about 04:00 hrs.

“All three prisoners escaped by jumping the fence. They used the portable toilet located on the inside to gain some height, but I must mention that these prisoners would have escaped in very close proximity to a number of ranks who were performing security details in terms of being deployed in the tower to overlook what is happening at the holding bay. While there were several ranks mounted in the four towers the escape occurred in close proximity to tower two and three which had an adequate amount of staff.  From observation and the investigation that was done thus far it is clear that the ranks were not alert,” Samuels explained.

In addition, the acting director said the information gathered so far does not suggest collusion between ranks and the escaped prisoners.

“I would not point to collusion as it is right now since a detailed investigation has not yet been completed. It, however, points to the fact that persons were negligent in the execution of their duties and as such they were unable to observe the movement and actions of the prisoners,” He said.

Meanwhile, Samuels told the Department of Public Information (DPI), “All efforts are being made to ensure that these persons at large are recaptured. From their known records, none of them should pose too much of a security risk to the public.”

The public is urged to call the nearest police station or telephone number 220-4173 if there are any sightings of the escapees.

Samuels is assuring that all efforts would be made by the search teams in terms of going to these areas to affect the re-arrest of those persons.

He reminded that the authorities are still making efforts to recapture Paul Goriah, who escaped the same facility more than a year ago.
