Security Minister calls for more citizens to be involved in Community Policing

DPI, Guyana, Monday, March 5, 2018

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan says he is satisfied with the efforts of the Community Policing Groups (CPGs). He made this pronouncement at a press conference held today at his Brickdam Office, to launch the observance of 42 years of community policing in Guyana.

Minister Ramjattan also called on citizens to become more involved in community policing. “Far more can be done but more can be done by the community people like yourselves and a lot of others becoming involved. What I find happening is that, the more educated of the lot within the communities, who understand domestic violence, who understand suicide prevention, who can help in so many social projects and who also have the financing to help plug a better system, are not coming forward”, he stated.

CPGs’ Administrator Dennis Pompey said it is imperative for citizens to recognise the important roles community policing play in maintaining safe neighbourhoods.

“The security of their community rests with them. Every citizen in a community has the responsibility to have a safe and secure community because without a safe and secure community you can’t have development. You cannot bring up your children in the right way you want to bring them up, and those are some of the things we try to instill. Regardless of the little difficulties, you might face it is important for you to come forward because you will benefit, and your kids will benefit also”, reiterated Pompey.

Further, Pompey said there are currently 221 CPGs nationally with four thousand 4304 members. In ‘A’ Division there are 38 groups with 737 members.

Community Policing is a volunteer activity aimed at working in partnership with the Guyana Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to maintaining vigilance and suppressing crimes in communities across the country.

This year’s observances are being held under the theme, “Promoting Safe and United Communities by Building Social Cohesion through – improved quality of communication; community understanding and citizens’ needs.”
