“Before you become a leader or are in charge, you have to serve.” This advice was imparted to the students of the Bertram Collins College of the Public Service by Minister of Public Service Hon. Tabitha Sarabo-Halley

The Minister was at the time delivering a presentation to the students.

Genuine leadership, she told the eager students, is determined by the way “you maintain your principles, your perspective on life, [and] your values.” Minister Sarabo-Halley further explained that good leaders serve with integrity, avoid the pitfalls of wanting to get rich without investing the time and effort.

“True leaders are about becoming more than you, it is not about how much you do, but it’s about fulfilling your purpose and by fulfilling that purpose you attain a certain level of creditably…you maintain certain principles, do you easily comprise those principles,” The Public Service Minister said.

Reminding the Bertram students that “nothing happens overnight”, the Minister pointed out that on their path to becoming future leaders, the students will encounter systems that are already in place to ensure the development of a specific sector/department.

“… remain confident in why are you here, what your purpose is, and what your goals are, and that will determine whether or not, one day, you become me, [Minster of Public Service], or better than me or in a particular sector.”

Minister Sarabo-Halley closed by reminding the Bertram students of their capacity to do better and ensure the culture of the public sector remains one of service.
