─ Govt prepares to undertake Voluntary National Review

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, March 19, 2019

As the government prepares to engage in the Voluntary National Review (VNR) later this year, Minister of Foreign Carl Greenidge, who is performing the duties of president reemphasised the importance of setting the tone and completing the groundwork now.

In an invited comment on Monday at the ending of day one of the first session of the workshop on “achieving performance targets”, held at the Arthur Chung Convention Center in Liliendaal, Minister Greenidge stated “it is understood that you can’t wait until 2030 to determine whether you have arrived…you need to have benchmarks.”

“In other words, if you say the level of education needs to be higher, you need to monitor them over time, collect information, monitor the indicators and then determine whether you need to adjust policy wise in order to speed up or change direction, change scope and the like,he further explained.

It was noted that for every country the priority with regards to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), would differ.

“The main one being to move people in a meaningful way from the current status that they have, particularly in relation to poverty, health, education and these other goals,” Minister Greenidge remarked.

Countries participating in meeting the SDGs are seeking to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education, the promotion of sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, urgent action to combat climate change and more.

The United Nations’ meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development will be held from July 9 through 18 in New York.
