Seven Curry Tour promises unique cultural culinary experience

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is launching a Seven Curry Tour that has been designed for local and overseas visitors who are looking for a new culinary experience.

Mr. Clyde Edwards, Product Development Facilitation Officer at the GTA told DPI that the activity will officially be added to the Guyana tourism experience on November 27.

Mr. Eon John, who is also known as ‘the Singing Chef’ said the idea for the tour stemmed from a demand for vegan and vegetarian food.

“Now here we have something in Guyana which is inspired by our culture; really, the Hindu culture, and which is used for special occasions, but it is naturally vegan,” he said.

The approximately six-hour tour is expected to be a great experience for persons who love food.

“Food is such an incredible thing, so to create a tour that you can go and you can actually do in Guyana, in Georgetown… You come here [and] not just go into your favourite restaurant; you get a cooking lesson, you get a tour of Guyana, you go to the spice factory, you go and pick the lilies, you go to Tony ‘the puri man’.  We put all those together,” Mr. John explained.

The tour culminates at The Pergola Smokehouse and Café where tourists will be given the opportunity to participate in cooking the seven curries, using all the spices and local ingredients gathered along the way.

Proprietor of The Pergola, Chef Kester Robinson, said he opened his restaurant with the view of adding to the local culinary landscape. The Seven Curry Tour is an excellent opportunity to do so, he said.

“When we talk about curry and you talk about great curry, Guyana comes to mind with our large ethnic group and all the contributions. So, for me, a curry tour, and being able to have seven curry in the middle of Georgetown on a week day, that is a representation of Guyana,” Chef Robinson added.

The Chef said his restaurant’s layout will enhance the experience for tourists.  “I think it adds that kind of home, backyard, countryside [feel]…so many different dimensions to it all nest together to create a really good product and more so, it adds to Guyana tourism and locals as well who want to explore,” he explained.

During Friday’s debut, participant Mr. Christopher Chin said he enjoyed the experience and hoped to see similar, unique experiences offered locally.

“It’s a great boost for persons who are involved in local tourism and that has a ripple effect on so many other industries. So, I would like to advocate for our local people to do more local tours, get to know more about your local people, your country and it will be a great help for tourism in our country,” he said. The Seven Curry Tour is one of three new tours the GTA will add to its roster of activities for tourism Awareness Month. The other tours are the Moraikabai Village Tour and the Wakapau Village Tour.
