Several Region Six community grounds being rehabilitated

Several community centre grounds in East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) are currently being rehabilitated, in keeping with the Government’s promise to provide the requisite sporting facilities for recreation and to develop local sporting talent.

Community grounds at Kilcoy/ Chesney, Albion, Glasgow Cricket, Corriverton sports grounds among others have been identified for these new developments.

Speaking with DPI, Regional Chairman, Mr. David Armogan said the aim is to provide a safe space for young people to practice and foster their talents.

This initiative, he said, will be made possible through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC).

“With the interest in assisting in the development of young people in the region, we have identified a few community grounds that need some rehabilitation works. These works will not only to serve to benefit athletes but even residents who would like to keep fit and healthy,” he said.

Mr. Armogan added that while the RDC also hopes to rehabilitate the Mara playfield, it will need to seek assistance from the Ministry to undertake works like fencing and other aspects.

During a visit to the region on October 11, President Hon. Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali had announced that $2 million was earmarked for the development of Line Path Community Centre Ground, $9.5 million for the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground and $1.2 million for the enhancement of the Community Centre Ground at Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.

The funds are to be used for enhancement and maintenance. Works will include the fencing of the areas and grounds and pitch preparation.
