The highly anticipated results of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) are out and students and teachers from the top-performing schools are ecstatic.

In Region Three, the Academy of Excellence located at Cornelia Ida on the West Coast of Demerara is arguably the happiest having secured the number three spot in the country with two of their pupils – Ruth Larson and Sarah Johnson. They both gained 530 marks out of the allotted 536. From the top one per cent of the country comprising 166 pupils, the school recorded 29 pupils out of the 166.  A remarkable achievement according to Headteacher Latchmin Gopal.

“In 2017 my school recorded 17 Queen’s College placements, with five pupils in the top ten of the country. It was then two pupils in the number two position and three pupils in the number five position. This year we did better by gaining 23 spots at Queen’s College, with 5 pupils again in the top ten of the country. In total, we have 29 pupils in the top one percent of the country. We did well as a school and I am proud of my staff that really worked hard with the pupils,” an excited Gopal remarked.

Additionally, Leonora Primary School registered five spaces within the top one per cent of the country. The pupil that gained the highest marks for Leonora Primary is Chitra Parbho who secured 526 marks. Other schools in the region that secured places in the top one per cent are Wales Primary, Genesis Early Childhood, Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary and Meten Meer Zorg Islamic School.

In terms of the top ten pupils for Region Three, Academy of Excellence has eight pupils in the line-up namely Ruth Larson, Shrirish Persaud, Aditya Sharma, Sarah Johnson, Jaaya Shiwraj, Yuvraj Tulatam, Athaliah Joe and Aryan Sugrim. The other two came from Genesis Early Childhood and Leonora Primary and are Janae Boucher and Chitra Parbhu respectively.

With reference to overall subject performance, the region recorded significant improvement in Mathematics when compared to last year. In 2018, 1,827 pupils sat the exams in Region Three and recorded 41.3 per cent passes in Mathematics. This year 1,836 pupils sat the exams and recorded 51.7 per cent passes in Mathematics.

Similar improvements were seen in English and Science moving from 62.5 per cent and 51 per cent in 2018 to 65.7 per cent and 52.2 per cent in 2019 respectively. A slight decline in Social Studies was recorded from 50.5 per cent in 2018 to 48 per cent in 2019.

Of the top one per cent in the country, Region Three owns 0.2 per cent and according to Regional Education Officer Annesta Douglas, the results are satisfactory.

“We have to do an in-depth analysis of the results before we can draw solid conclusions however, the results are satisfactory. Let me congratulate all the pupils that excelled especially the ones in my region and wish them well as they advance to the next stage of learning,” said Douglas.
