─ Special offers for emancipation celebrations

DPI, Guyana, Friday, July 27, 2018

As we prepare to celebrate 180 years of freedom from slavery, many persons are looking for that unique African attire. Owner and designer of MH Designs, Melana Hudson is customizing jewellery, handbags, shoes and a number of other items to complement your unique African themed outfit.

This year, Hudson is part of the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) pre-emancipation cultural sale on Main Street, Georgetown.  The entrepreneur’s business focuses on customized necklaces, bangles and other accessories, bags, shoes, purses and sleeping bonnets among others to suit various occasions.

“If you are still looking for that right necklace, purse or shoe to go with your African wear, well look no more! You can come down to Main Street. We have a wide range of items,” Hudson told the Department of Public Information (DPI) who was there to get a view of the array of items.

She added, that the prices for items are economical. “I sell at a cost that you can afford, so anyone can afford an MH design, there are no exceptions.”

The Essequibo-born designer is encouraging patrons to take advantage of her Georgetown reach. Though she often crafts items with her own materials, the designer explained that patrons can bring their own matching cloths to have their purses, shoes or accessories beautified.

“Most of the materials, I source from Guyana. My hardware I import them. I do import some of my fabrics. A lot of persons get their fabrics to make their outfits from the store. If they purchase from the stores and I make my accessories, then it’s easy for them to get accessories to go along with their outfits,” Hudson related.

In 2014, the Hudson started her small business in Trinidad and Tobago where she resided.  The business idea, she explained, stemmed from creating Christmas presents (makeup bags) for her co-workers from various pieces of cloth. This, she pointed out, motivated her to channel her talent into creating a small business.

Recently, she emigrated to Guyana to further expand her enterprise and plans to open a central location in Georgetown, before the end of 2018.

The designer is calling on Guyanese to support local businesses like hers. “Supporting your own is good for the country because we will grow as a country and you are helping your fellow brother/sister to afford a livelihood…not everyone can work in an office, someone has to make the accessories for you to wear. These things are all available in our country and we are talented people; why not support our own.”

Hudson can be contacted on her mobile 665-9792 or on Facebook @ MHDesigns.
