DPI, Guyana, Saturday, January 12, 2019

Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, earlier today, said the “better life remains the goal of our country.”

“The better life can only be promoted if we respect our diversity, if we respect who we are… our cultural differences are no barriers for the development of social cohesion.”

Speaking at a simple ceremony to celebrate the 166th anniversary of the coming of Chinese Indentured Immigrants to Guyana, at the Winsor Forest Primary School, West Coast Demerara, Prime Minister Nagamootoo said Guyana’s relationship with China is one that has been based on “brotherhood, sisterhood and compassion.” He noted that China has always respected Guyana’s sovereignty and right to develop its own democracy.

“Our relationship with China has been one of the most outstanding with Guyana’s foreign policy,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Meanwhile, Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Cui Jianchun says unity is a “driving force for the nation’s growth, development and progress.”

During his brief remarks Ambassador Jianchun said, “social cohesion, unity is really important for us to transform Guyana’s economy and empower the people to build a sustainable community for the better life.”

The Chinese Ambassador remarked that Guyana and China have broader prospects for exchange and cooperation.  He said that there is potential development by the two countries in various sectors. He explained that while Guyana is expecting oil in less than two years, it is important to have a “diversified economy.”

Ambassador Jianchun disclosed that under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese Government and its people are willing to work with the Government of Guyana to develop a joint action plan.

In commemoration of the 166th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese indentured immigrants to Guyana, the Chinese Association Donated supplies to the Winsor Forest Primary school.

Also attending the event were Government Ministers and members of the diplomatic community.
