Social Cohesion Department takes on ‘Mash Fitness’

─ an initiative to get Guyana fit

─ event to run every Friday until Mashramani

DPI, Guyana, Sunday, January 20, 2019

The atmosphere was warm and festive. Guyanese turned out in their numbers, on Friday evening at the Department of Social Cohesion’s First ‘Mash Fitness’.

The initiative aims to get every Guyanese to join the department on its, “get fit agenda” for the upcoming Mashramani celebration. More than 100 persons assembled on Main street, Georgetown, clad in T- Shirts and Gym tights and exercised to the rhythm of the latest soca beat.

Permanent Secretary of the Department of Social Cohesion, Melissa Tucker said the best way to get everyone involved is to go public. She added that the event will be kept every Friday for one hour at the same location with the same festive mood.

Tucker said she is elated to see Guyanese of all ages be a part of the Fitness group. She noted that the event will be annually.

Guyanese all across the ten administrative regions will be celebrating Mashramani, under the theme, ‘Celebrate Mash 49 with Victory iMind’. The  department has started to host several fun filled activities and will continue with other events throughout the month of February.

For this year’s Republic anniversary, the ministry will host activities across the country. Some identified activities are Bands Concert in Region 9, Junior Calypso and Soca Competition in Region 7, Banks Calyspo Semi-Final at Union No.53 Village Community Centre, Carib Soca Monarch Semi-Final in Linden/Georgetown Municipal Bus Park, Chutney Dance Competition in Region 3.
